What Divides Us

What Divides Us

My son Josh and I were reading his nightly devotional about divisions in the church, and how they are often a result of how we judge one another or our motives. As we were reading, it seemed very timely considering the upcoming national elections and the divisiveness in our country.

As we finished the devotional, I felt a nudge from God, the one I often do when He inspires me to write. The devotional reminded me that no matter who the candidates are or which political party we think is to blame for our circumstances, the real culprit is Satan. The enemy loves it when families are fighting across the dinner table. He loves when neighbors stop talking to each other and when the word “hate” is spewed across the internet. He really enjoys any hold he has on our lives because he's the master of hate and division. However, that doesn't mean we have to take his bait. It is still our personal choice as to whether we'll go along with his lies and manipulation.

James 3:17-18is full of truth: “Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others.” Do you think James meant this for times like these? That we should get along regardless of whether we’re Republicans or Democrats, regardless of who gets elected? I believe so.

James' counsel isn’t done as he continues in chapter 4:1-3: “Where do you think all these appalling wars and quarrels come from? Do you think they just happen? Think again. They come about because you want your own way, and fight for it deep inside yourselves. You lust for what you don’t have and are willing to kill to get it. You want what isn’t yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it.” (MSG)

In this time of so much strife and division, there couldn’t be a greater need for Christians to be the hands and feet of Christ, being salt and light in a world of turmoil. No matter who wins politically, there will be so many who feel defeated after a hard-fought battle.

Regardless of the outcome, I have determined I will not wring my hands in despair nor arrogantly proclaim a victory, but rather trust that God allowed it. Since He allowed it, I will, to the best of my ability, love people, share His Message, and present peace and unity because strife, discord, and judgment will only divide us further.

Let’s all give each other a break and recognize the enemy doesn’t deserve a place in our lives. Let’s decide now to not allow Satan to take hold of our emotions or let our fears become our actions. Instead, let’s live humbly and in peace with one another, respecting each other’s opinions without judging, and focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us. Let’s truly honor God, regardless of who wins this election.

God Bless the United States of America.
