Goosebumps…tears. As I was watching Season Five of The Chosen, tears rolled down my cheeks. Although The Chosen series has brought criticism from some as not being Biblically correct, for me, the series is powerful as the disciples are personalized, creating real-life scenarios that gives me better perspective of what it was like back when Jesus was alive. In addition, seeing Jesus played out in the flesh through this amazing actor has made me fall more deeply in love with the real Jesus. Plus, I’m learning things about the Jewish culture that I might not ever have known. For example, although I’ve been a follower of Christ for decades, I’d never heard of a Dayenu.
If you’re like me, to clarify, Dayenu is a song that is traditionally sung during the telling of the story of Exodus at the Passover seder (or ritualist meal). The song lists a series of kindnesses God performed for the Jewish people during and after the Exodus and concludes each phrase with the word Dayenu, which means, “it would have been enough.”
Although there is traditional language for this song, in this episode, the women created their own phrases. It was beyond powerful and inspired me to write my own Dayenu. As I wrote it out, pondering each phrase, I felt challenged. Did I really believe this? Could I own this as my truth? Could I live this? The words pierced my soul as I realized that every stage of my journey was a reminder of how much I am loved by my heavenly Father. Indeed, no matter what happened in my life, Jesus would have been enough. So, here’s my attempt at my own personal Dayenu:
If He had shown His love by placing me with wonderful parents, it would have been enough.
If He had given me wonderful parents, but not the opportunity to learn to work hard, it would have been enough.
If He had taught me to work hard, but not given me a world of opportunities, it would have been enough.
If He had given me a world of opportunities, and not given me the love of my life, it would have been enough.
If He had given me the love of my life, and not the amazing children to bless our lives, it would have been enough.
If He had given me the amazing children to bless our lives, and not given me a purpose to serve Him, it would have been enough.
If He had given me a purpose to serve Him, and not the joy of my grandchildren, it would have been enough.
If He had given me the joy of my grandchildren, and not the years to reflect on His hand in my life, it would have been enough.
Jesus is enough, no matter where we are in our life’s journey, even if our season feels unfulfilling or uncertain. With or without whatever we can imagine, Jesus is always enough.
