Making Room

Making Room

Our oldest son Tucker was getting married. As we arrived in California, the excitement of being with him and his fiancé couldn’t be contained. We’d rented a home where we would all be staying. I knew they would be waiting there for us.

Although the flight arrived on time, the checkout line for the rental car stretched for what felt like miles. When we finally arrived at the car rental counter, a polite man told us our mid-sized car wasn't ready! I could have cried. He paused to look at his computer and then added, "However, there is a van ready now if you'd rather have that."

"Ready now!” That’s all we needed to hear so with van keys in hand, we loaded into our van and within minutes, were on the road. An hour later, we pulled into the driveway of the home. Tucker and Mica were waiting up, but our soon to be granddaughter, three-year-old Leena, had fallen asleep. Kisses would have to wait until morning.

With a few days left before the wedding, there were some last-minute errands to run. We shopped for groceries and filled the back of the van with food. Then we picked up wedding supplies, tuxes, and decorations and again, filled the van. The day of the wedding arrived and once again we filled the van, this time with the wedding dress, decorations, and everything else that would fit.

The wedding ceremony overflowed with joy, a gorgeous, fun, memorable, and blessed event. Oh, how I loved adding two beautiful young ladies to our family. Exhausted at the end of the night, again we stuffed the van with gifts, left-over cake, decorations, and most importantly, a very tired little Leena. As our daughter Kassi buckled Leena into her car seat, one of the only places still left to sit, Leena gave a tired sigh and said, "It's time to go home. Now we're a family." Oh, from the mouths of babes. Her sweet comment defined what the day was about: enlarging our family and making room for more.

The next morning, the extended family joined us at the rental house to watch the newlywed’s open gifts. The day passed too quickly, and the next day, we loaded the van, filling every vacant space with gifts and food to drop off at Tucker & Mica's apartment. With final hugs, we headed back to the airport.

As our week of celebration came to an end, we dropped our van off at the airport. Handing the keys back at the car rental counter, I felt immense gratitude. God, in His usual way, filled our need long before we even knew it was necessary, ensuring we had a van for the many occasions when we needed more room.

I shouldn't have been surprised. After all, He is a God who always makes room. When Christ was born, He made room in a stable. A relationship with Christ is simply making room in our hearts for Him to be the Lord of our lives. Upon Jesus' departure from earth, He promised that "My Father's house has many rooms...I am going there to prepare a place for you." John 14:2 (NIV) Can you imagine what that room will be like?

Of course, it was just a van, but God used it as a powerful reminder of how He's made room for us. I pray every day I will make room for Him to work through my life, for His glory.
